De Rosa – 1983 Professional

  • The Bike – 1983 (or soon after) De Rosa Professional (also commonly referred to as the Super Prestige) with full Pantograph Super Record Group.
  • The Story – Acquired through eBay.  Paid a fair sum for the bike but the seller took it upon himself to list the value at almost three times that on the UPS declaration to “protect himself” for shipping to Canada.  UPS added $65 brokerage fee plus duty, Provincial Sales Tax and GST (National Sales Tax) of almost 20% of the declared value to the delivery.  It turned out to be an expensive bike.  When the bike arrived, it had a silver mist over parts of the bike that looked like someone spray-painted too close to it.  Fortunately, I was able to remove the over-spray without any damage to the paint or decals.
  • The Cool Factor – A most brilliant red that only the Italians can do.  Full panto group on one of my favorite riding bikes.

  1. You have a beautiful bike, indeed. To be correct, it is a 1986 De Rosa Professional, not 1983 Super Prestige. I have the same frame that I’ve owned since 1989 or 1990. The catalog photo you have included is from the 1986 De Rosa catalog. The frame is often mistakenly called, “Super Prestige” or “Eddy Merckx” due to the top tube decal. It refers to the Super Prestige Pernod was not a single race, but a season long competition similar to the Pro Tour of today and celebrates Eddy’s wins while riding De Rosa in the early 1970’s. http://www.raydobbins.com/derosa/pernod

Thought you would like to know.

    Cheers!

    • Thanks John. You are correct about the name of the model, I used Super Prestige because that’s what they are commonly referred to. Campagnolo introduced the C-Record group in 1985. So, to me, anything with the Super Record Group on it is pre-1985 especially, ones with the old style fluted crankarms. It could have been a carried over model for the 1986 catalog. The same catalog also shows a bike with the C-Record Group already.
